Our Mission & Core Values

We Exist to Give
Everyone Access to
Kitchen Truth

Our mission is simple to state and hard to maintain: publish only what testing proves, and never publish what it doesn't — regardless of commercial pressure.

We started KitchensAdvise in 2013 because we were frustrated. The internet was — and largely still is — full of kitchen "reviews" written by people who never cooked with the products they were recommending. Affiliate-motivated rankings. Manufacturer-gifted samples. Paid placements dressed up as editorial content.

That frustration became a commitment: build the publication we wished existed. One that treats kitchen guidance the way medicine treats clinical trials — rigorous, repeatable, peer-reviewed, and immune to commercial influence.

"The best kitchen tool is the one that performs — not the one that pays us to say it does."
— James Park, Editor-in-Chief, KitchensAdvise

12 years later, 2.4 million people a month trust us to tell them the truth about their kitchen investments. That trust is the only metric we truly optimise for.

What We Believe

Data over opinion, always
Every claim we make is backed by a measurement, a test result, or a peer-reviewed source. If we can't prove it, we don't print it.
Radical transparency
We publish our methods, our data, our criteria weights, and our conflicts of interest. No black boxes. You can verify everything we say.
Living, updated truth
Products change. Manufacturing batches shift. We re-test everything every six months and update our scores honestly — even when it hurts revenue.
Global, accessible guidance
Kitchen intelligence shouldn't be a privilege. Our guidance is free, jargon-light, and designed for cooks at every level in every country.
Safety is non-negotiable
Chemical safety testing isn't optional for us — PFAS migration, heavy metal leaching, and food-contact compliance are tested on every product we review.

Six Values That Define Us

Scientific Integrity
Every verdict is evidence-based. We apply the same rigour to a $25 peeler as we do to a $1,200 stand mixer — because the method must be universal to be trustworthy.
Editorial Independence
Our commercial and editorial teams are firewalled by policy and practice. No advertiser has ever influenced a score. No publisher ever will. This is the foundation everything else is built on.
Radical Transparency
We publish every methodology detail, data source, and conflict of interest. Readers can see exactly how we reached every score. No algorithm or black box determines our rankings.
Reader-First, Always
Everything we do is optimised for reader utility — not page views, not advertiser satisfaction, not SEO. If a piece of content doesn't make readers better at buying or using kitchen tools, we don't publish it.
Expertise, Not Opinion
We write about what our team professionally knows. A knife review is written by a certified chef. A motor analysis is written by a mechanical engineer. No generalists, no outsourcing, no AI-generated filler.
Accountability Through Updates
Publishing a score is the beginning, not the end. We revisit every reviewed product every six months and correct the record — publicly and clearly — when findings change.
Our Story

12 Years of Kitchen Intelligence

From a two-person project in a Brooklyn apartment kitchen to the world's most trusted kitchen product authority — this is how we got here.

2013 — The Beginning
Founded in a Brooklyn Kitchen
Food scientist Sarah Renfrew and journalist James Park started KitchensAdvise as a side project — frustrated that kitchen product advice online was driven entirely by affiliate commissions, not actual testing. First review: a $40 cast iron skillet, tested over 60 cook sessions.
2 people · 1 kitchen
2015 — First Major Expansion
First Full-Time Team & 100th Review
Reader growth forced the team's hand. KitchensAdvise hired its first four full-time staff — a second food scientist, a mechanical engineer, a culinary writer, and an operations manager. Published the 100th review: a comprehensive analysis of five stand mixer models.
6 staff · 100 reviews
2016 — Lab Certification
Dedicated Testing Facility Opens
Secured a 3,200 sq ft dedicated testing facility in Queens, New York. Equipped with calibrated thermal imaging cameras, torque measurement equipment, and a full chemistry analysis station. Applied for and received ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation — a first for any kitchen publication.
ISO 17025 Accredited
2018 — 47-Point Framework
Scientific Scoring System Launched
Published our first comprehensive scoring methodology, developed in partnership with food scientists at Cornell University and mechanical engineers from MIT. The 47-point framework became the foundation of every review we publish and has since been cited by academic researchers as a model for independent consumer product testing.
47 criteria · Cornell & MIT
2019 — National Recognition
Cited by NYT, Consumer Reports & Food & Wine
A watershed year. The New York Times referenced our stand mixer methodology in a feature on consumer product testing. Consumer Reports cited our PFAS analysis protocol. Food & Wine named us the most trusted independent kitchen publication in the country. Monthly readership crossed 500,000 for the first time.
500K readers · National press
2021 — Global Expansion
1 Million Monthly Readers · 80+ Countries
International readership exploded during the cooking renaissance of 2020–21. We expanded our team to 16 specialists, added a dedicated culinary safety chemist, and began publishing region-specific guides for international kitchen equipment standards. Reader survey voted us #1 kitchen resource worldwide.
1M readers · Global reach
2023 — Award Year
Best Testing Methodology & Editorial Integrity Awards
Received two major industry awards in the same year: Best Testing Methodology from the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), and the Editorial Integrity Award from the Consumer Journalism Association — the latter specifically for publishing negative reviews of major advertisers without retraction or editorial interference.

2025 — Today
2.4M Readers · 1,240+ Products · 22 Experts
KitchensAdvise today is a 22-person team serving 2.4 million monthly readers in 140+ countries. We've reviewed 1,240+ products, published 380+ buying guides, and produced original research that's been cited by universities, consumer organisations, and kitchen brands worldwide. How We Test

Our 47-Point
Scientific Scoring System

Not all kitchen products need the same tests. A pressure cooker needs seal integrity analysis; a chef's knife needs edge retention testing; a blender needs motor endurance tests under load. Our 47-point framework provides a universal baseline — then each product category gets additional category-specific tests layered on top.

The framework was co-developed with Cornell University's Department of Food Science and MIT's Department of Mechanical Engineering, and has been externally reviewed by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT). It is fully documented and publicly available.

Editorial Independence Commitments

What We Guarantee to Every Reader

These are not aspirations — they are documented, auditable policies. Violating any of them would be grounds for immediate staff termination under our editorial charter.

Retail-only product acquisition
Products are always purchased anonymously at retail price. No manufacturer samples, press units, or gifted items — ever.
Advertiser has zero editorial access
No brand representative is permitted to view, request changes to, delay, or influence any review content before or after publication.
Affiliate links never influence rankings
Products are ranked by their lab scores, not by affiliate commission rates. The highest-paying partner product will not appear first if its score doesn't warrant it.
Scores updated regardless of impact
When re-testing reveals a product has degraded or improved, we update the score publicly — even if it means recommending against a high-commission product.
Full methodology published with every review
Every review links to its complete methodology page — what was tested, how it was measured, and exactly how each sub-score was computed.
Annual external editorial audit
We submit to an independent audit of our editorial processes every year. Results are published in our annual transparency report.
The People Behind Every Score

22 Experts. Zero Generalists.

Everyone on our team is a working professional in their field. Every food scientist has a PhD. Every chef has worked in a professional kitchen. Every engineer holds lab certifications. Our editorial standards are built on their credentials, not their word count.

Our Testing Facility

A Dedicated Lab Facility
Built for Kitchen Truth

Our 3,200 square foot testing facility in Queens, New York, is purpose-built for kitchen product analysis. It houses a fully equipped professional kitchen alongside a dedicated laboratory station — allowing us to move seamlessly between controlled scientific testing and real-world cooking validation.

The facility operates under ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation — the same standard used by reference laboratories worldwide — meaning our test results meet the rigour required for independent scientific publication, not just consumer media.

Unlike manufacturers' internal test labs, our facility is structured around one constraint: the results must never be favourable to the product being tested unless the data makes them so. There is no commercial interest in our laboratory. The data decides.

Editorial & Content Standards

What Every Article Must Meet

These are not style guidelines — they are minimum requirements that every piece of content on KitchensAdvise must satisfy before publication. No exceptions.

Expert Authorship
Every piece of content is written by a staff member whose professional credentials match the subject matter. We do not use freelancers, content agencies, or AI-generated text.
Author's credentials listed on every article
Subject-area match verified by Managing Editor
Second expert review before any publication
Source Citation
Every factual claim must link to a primary source — either our own lab data, a peer-reviewed academic paper, or a directly cited technical standard. "Industry consensus" is not a source.
Minimum one cited source per factual claim
Secondary sources only when primary unavailable
Sources reviewed for publication date and credibility
Real-World Testing Required
No product review may be published without the author having personally used the product in a cooking context. Spec-sheet reviews are explicitly prohibited by editorial policy.
Minimum 10 personal cooking sessions per product
Testing must cover the product's core claimed use cases
Author provides signed testing attestation on record
Currency & Update Policy
All factual content must reflect current reality. Each article carries a "last verified" date, and our editorial team is required to flag articles for review when relevant facts change.
Every article carries a publication and last-verified date
Outdated claims trigger mandatory re-review
Product reviews re-tested every 6 months minimum
Conflict of Interest Disclosure
Any financial or personal relationship between an author and a reviewed brand must be disclosed at the top of the article and reported to the Managing Editor before assignment.
All affiliate relationships disclosed prominently
Personal brand relationships bar author from review
Annual COI declarations from all editorial staff
Corrections Policy
When we get something wrong, we say so — clearly, promptly, and at the top of the article. Silent edits are prohibited. Every correction is logged in our public corrections register.

Our Community

2.4 Million Readers.
One Shared Standard.

Our readership is as diverse as the world's kitchens. Home cooks in Dhaka. Restaurant chefs in Paris. Food scientists in Tokyo. Kitchen equipment buyers for hotel chains in Dubai. What unites them is a single standard: they want honest, data-backed guidance — not affiliate-driven content dressed up as advice.

We've built a community around that shared value — across our website, newsletter, and social platforms — where kitchen intelligence is discussed, tested, and shared openly. We actively engage with our readers: we publish their product requests, incorporate their real-world feedback, and respond to every methodological challenge they raise.

Our newsletter reaches 680,000 subscribers with a 42% open rate — more than double the industry average — because people actually read what we send. It's earned, not bought.

About Us FAQ

Questions
We Get Asked

Common questions about who we are, how we work, and what drives our independence. If you don't find your answer here, reach out directly.

Still have questions?
Our editorial team reads every message. For methodology questions, press inquiries, or corrections, contact us directly.
Who owns KitchensAdvise? Is it backed by a media conglomerate?
KitchensAdvise is independently owned. We are not a subsidiary of any media group, kitchen brand, retailer, or private equity firm. The company was founded by Sarah Renfrew and James Park in 2013 and has remained independently owned since. There is no outside shareholder with the ability to influence editorial content. Our revenue comes from reader-acknowledged affiliate commissions and our premium newsletter — neither of which confers editorial access to any brand.
Do you ever receive free products from manufacturers?
Never. Every product we test is purchased anonymously at full retail price. We don't accept manufacturer samples, press units, "review kits," or gifted items of any kind. This is a founding principle of KitchensAdvise and is stated explicitly in our editorial charter. The reason is simple: a gifted product creates an implied obligation. Retail purchase creates none.
How do you make money if you're truly independent?
We earn affiliate commissions when readers purchase products we recommend — typically 3–8% depending on the retailer. This is disclosed prominently on every page. Critically, affiliate relationships have zero influence on our scores or rankings. A product with no affiliate relationship can be our top recommendation; a product with a high-commission affiliate will be ranked last if its score warrants it. We also publish a paid premium newsletter with deeper research content. That's it — no display advertising, no sponsored content, no brand partnerships.
Why should I trust your scores over other review sites?
You shouldn't trust us because we say so — you should verify it. We publish our entire methodology: the equipment we use, the criteria we measure, the weighting we apply, and the data behind every score. Our lab is ISO 17025 accredited — the same standard used by scientific reference laboratories. Our editorial processes are externally audited annually. If you find an error in our methodology or a score you think is wrong, contact us with your reasoning. We will investigate and publish our response.
Can I request a product for review?
Yes — reader product requests genuinely influence our review schedule. Submit requests through our review request form. We prioritise by community demand, category gaps, and editorial judgement. Note: requests from manufacturers or brands to review their own products are automatically declined, regardless of how they're framed.
I found a factual error in one of your articles. What should I do?
Please submit a correction via our corrections form with the article URL, the specific claim you believe is incorrect, and your source for the correct information. We investigate every correction request — and if you're right, we'll update the article, acknowledge the correction at the top of the page, and log it in our public corrections register. We treat correction requests as quality improvements, not attacks. We welcome them.
Are you hiring? How do I join the team?
Yes, we're actively growing. We hire exclusively for in-house roles — we don't work with freelancers, content agencies, or contract writers. Open positions are listed on our careers page. We look for food scientists, culinary professionals, engineers, and journalists with deep domain expertise. Applications without subject-matter credentials in the relevant field are not considered — that standard is what makes KitchensAdvise what it is.
